Mrs. Sue Thurston
Welcome to The Thurston Think Tank! My children are fondly known as The Thurston Thinkers. I have been teaching at Yulupa since 1986 and each day has been a marvelous adventure. Over the years I have raised three children, each one is now established in their careers. Being a parent has made me a more passionate teacher and person.
I have learned many important things over the years. Teaching techniques continue to evolve, but the importance of a rigorous education never changes. I strive to utilize best practices and current brain research in my lessons, eliminating barriers to ensure all children succeed. I endeavor to provide an environment that encourages innovation and creativity. In my classroom we celebrate out of the box thinking and perseverance. Above all, we celebrate each other and our unique qualities. I believe that children learn best when they have access healthy snacks, access to a water bottle and an abundance of love and laughter!
There are a large number of schools in the U.S. that have pet therapy programs and have utilized pets in curriculums with impressive success. I then approached the district administration and received approval to bring a dog into the classroom. In September of 2015, I introduced an Charlie as a therapy dog to Yulupa school. He and I have been certified as a Social Therapy team through PAWS for Loving Support.
Yulupa School now has three therapy dogs on campus. The dogs interact with all children for a multitude of reasons, in a variety of situations. They listen to children read books, and offers hugs to those needing a bit of TLC. As the children will tell you the Yulupa School dogs love kids!
