Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Heather Flanary

I grew up in the Sacramento Valley on a ranch near the Sutter Buttes. I spent my childhood summers in Victoria, British Columbia, where my mother, Kay was born. We would visit relatives, go boating and experience the fun and beauty that BC had to offer. I attended Chico State University while working as a bank teller.  The terrific thing about Chico was you could ride your bicycle everywhere and since I lived near Bidwell Park, I ran six miles a day.  I met my husband David, who was attending Chico State as well.

After earning my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Speech Pathology, we married and moved to Sonoma County. We love the climate and geographic diversity. I worked as a Speech Therapist in the schools for five years commuting from Santa Rosa to Cloverdale.  After this brief time in the public school system, I decided to switch gears and work as a Speech Pathologist in private practice, with an emphasis on stroke rehabilitation. At the time I had contracts to serve Palm Drive, Warrack, and Community Hospitals.  I created the swallowing disorders program at each facility by training staff to recognize difficulties that patients experience in acute care with swallowing and speech.  I also had an out-patient practice providing therapy to children and adults in the areas of voice, fluency, myofunctional, speech and language disorders. I continue to provide therapy services to Sutter when school is not in session.

I started working at Bennett Valley School District eleven years ago. My son attended school here as well. He is now going off to college. Indie, the Golden doodle and I love working with the students and staff on a daily basis. I still run and enjoy the parks nearby.
